Radiation Oncology
Radiation therapy is used to "zap" cancer cells with high-energy radioactive waves or particles, destroying harmful cells. Unlike chemotherapy, which exposes the entire body to cancer-fighting medicine, radiation targets only the tumor and the surrounding area. Radiation therapy may be used alone or in combination with surgery or chemotherapy.
At Rogue Valley Medical Center, a plan of care is created specifically for you by our cancer experts, and a radiation oncologist (doctor specializing in cancer care) oversees your treatment. A registered nurse will give you special instructions related to your therapy and will talk with you about your questions or concerns. A registered radiation therapist will give you your daily treatment. Our therapists are specially trained in a certified school of radiation therapy, and they work closely with your doctor and nurse.
