Crews began a major renovation on the Francis Cheney Family Place at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center on June 10. The Francis Cheney Family Place provides affordable lodging and solace to patients and their families based on availability and financial need. Over the last eighteen years, more than 20,000 guests have found comfort and support at the Francis Cheney Family Place.
The renovations are being paid for by generous donations from the community. So far, $500,000 has been raised—$200,000 of it from the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center Auxiliary—but a total of $2 million is needed over the next five years to complete the project and increase the endowments for Cheney Place and its counterpart in Grants Pass, The Family House.

“This will enable us to expand or maintain both homes so we can continue to provide a sanctuary for Asante patients and families,” said Sharon Young, manager of guest housing at Asante.

Extensive updates will include a new kitchen, dining area, and bathrooms with handicap access. The facility will also receive new flooring, beds and bedding, window coverings, lighting, furniture, children’s books and toys, computer stations, and flat-screen TVs.
To enhance the healing nature of Cheney Place, the renovation will be using sustainable products that meet LEED requirements such as the paint and flooring.
Construction began the week of June 10 and will be done in two phases.
- Phase I—June to August—eight of the 15 rooms will be closed for renovations.
- Phase II—August to September—the entire facility will be closed.
Cheney Place staff will help potential guests to make alternative arrangements when the facility is full or closed completely.
