Navigating the Road to Recovery
Michelle Lagorio, RN, BSN
Breast Health Coordinator/Cancer Care Navigator
When a woman is told she has breast cancer, she gets caught in a flood of emotions, questions, and options. The journey can be overwhelming. That’s why at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center, a friend comes alongside for the ride. She is the breast health coordinator, a specialized nurse navigator dedicated to guiding women through their breast cancer treatment and recovery.
This information includes every detail of a woman’s cancer care, from obtaining test results quickly to explaining treatment options to connecting patients and families with community resources for support or financial assistance. One of the best parts of having a nurse navigator is the ability to get all a patient’s questions answered and talk through her choices until she feels comfortable.
“A focus of my role is to assist cancer patients, caregivers, and families in bridging the gaps and decreasing barriers to care,” said Michelle Lagorio, breast health coordinator/cancer care navigator at Asante Three Rivers. A cancer diagnosis often sets people on a path involving multiple health services. The journey can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of all three. “I help patients navigate through the system and see them through their journey to survival,” she explained.
Michelle holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Linfield College and has been practicing as a registered nurse for 14 years. She worked as a post-surgical nurse for cancer patients undergoing surgery at Asante Three Rivers, and most recently served as clinical nurse manager of the hospital’s post surgical unit.
