Get the Best Care Possible—Right In Your Own Backyard

“I don’t think I could have gotten any better care than I did. Why go farther when I got the best care that I possibly could. I don’t know how they could have any better help than I got at Spears Cancer Center and Asante Three Rivers Medical Center.”                          —Kathy Hewkin, breast cancer survivor

Kathy's story

It’s one thing to talk about the comprehensive services that we offer our cancer patients, and it’s another to hear directly from people who have experienced it firsthand. Kathy and Tom Hewkin, longtime residents of southwestern Oregon, love their home and their retired life in Grants Pass. Kathy was a teacher and Tom was an administrator in the Three Rivers School District. Both are addicted to the Oregon Ducks and go to games whenever they can. Neither can say enough good things about their experience with Asante Three Rivers Medical Center and Spears Cancer Center following Kathy’s successful treatment for breast cancer.

Immediately after Kathy was diagnosed and decided to have surgery at Asante Three Rivers, she was contacted by Diana Sheldon, Asante Three Rivers Medical Center breast health coordinator.

“Diana Sheldon contacted me right away. I met with her, and she went with me to appointments. She had all of my records and my X-rays, and she explained all of my options to me. She was there for my surgery and really helped me through it all.”

Following surgery Kathy had radiation treatments at Spears Cancer Center, where she says she also had the best care possible.

“The people in Spears Cancer Center are wonderful. They made me feel at home. They greeted me at the door every time, whether it was a receptionist or a nurse or the radiologist. They talk to you, and they help you through it all. And they explain everything as you go. I looked forward to going over there. In fact, the last day I went I think I cried because I told them they’re so wonderful. I think they should be ‘people of the year’ at Spears Cancer Center.”

Tom agrees that staying in Grants Pass for treatment was the best possible option. “We’ve never had to worry about going out of the community for our medical needs. Kathy made a great call by getting her surgery and treatment at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center right here in Grants Pass.”

Compassionate Care When You Need it Most

“We are so fortunate to have such an incredible hospital in this valley that there was never a doubt; there was no need to go anyplace else to get any type of treatment. We have some of the best facilities, treatments, and oncologists at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. It takes all of those people to create such a great hospital.”                         —Kim Clark-Miller, breast cancer survivor

Kim's Story

Kim Clark-Miller was born at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center and is a fourth-generation resident of the Rogue Valley. Her children are the fifth generation to live on the same property that was farmed by Kim’s father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Kim found out that she had breast cancer on a Monday, and one week later she had a double mastectomy at the hospital.

Kim tells the story of her diagnosis and hospital stay:

“And so from Monday to Monday, I found out I had cancer to—boom—I had a double mastectomy and ended up having such an incredible stay at the hospital. Here I had a part of me removed, and they were just so compassionate and understanding.

“The hospital staff is amazing when it comes to cancer and everything that they do for all of the cancer patients. You can tell that they love their job. You can tell that people want to be there versus having a job and having to get a paycheck. And that is what meant so much to me—the fact that they were wholeheartedly there with me, not just doing the job.

“It is quite a calling these oncology nurses and the oncology doctors have. It is amazing. I couldn’t believe the strength that they have to go through that with the patients. When I was in the hospital, it was so comforting to know that I had really good people to take care of me.

“The oncology nurses are incredibly compassionate, not to say that the other ones aren’t, but they just have a softness about them. There are so many people there who are in such poor condition or in their last days, and these nurses just give it their all. The amount of love and concern and true love of their job is amazing.

“I never even thought one time to go someplace else or to find care anyplace besides the valley. I mean, I was born in the hospital, so where else would I go but Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center? I mean, it is just so home.”
