This PALS course is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of respiratory and/or cardiovascular emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest in pediatric patients.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), is a course developed by the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for the training of health care providers. It emphasizes early recognition of pre-arrest states and the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest in children. It also teaches relevant techniques that enable effective intervention in pediatric resuscitation.
Health care professionals seeking to gain PALS certification for the first time or whose certification has expired should register for this 2-day, in-person course.
Students will have the opportunity to learn:
- Pediatric assessment.
- Management of respiratory, circulatory, and acute cardiac problems.
- Skills, to include child and infant CPR, airway management, vascular access, ECG monitoring, and electrical therapies.
- Effective high performance team interaction and communication during resuscitation.
Prior to the course, the PALS provider student is responsible for independent study of the American Heart Association PALS provider manual. The majority of the teaching during the course is done in small group lectures, discussions and practical hands-on stations. This format allows maximal student-instructor interaction and was designed to enhance learning and decrease participant stress.
Upon successful completion, participants will be issued a PALS provider card through the American Heart Association. Provider status is valid for two years, and a renewal course is required to remain a PALS provider.
Learning Objectives
- Perform high quality CPR per AHA BLS recommendations.
- Differentiate between patients who do and do not require immediate intervention.
- Perform role as a high performance team member.
- Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure.
- Perform early interventions for respiratory distress and failure.
- Different between compensate and decompensated shock.
- Perform early interventions for the treatment of shock.
- Differentiate between stable and unstable patients with arrhythmia.
- Demonstrate treatment of dysrhythmia.
- Implement post arrest management.
Prerequisites
- Participants should have basic EKG interpretation and pharmacology knowledge. These are not taught in class.
- Participants must demonstrate CPR/BLS proficiency to complete the class.
- Required: Take and pass the Pre-Course Self-Assessment online. A copy of the completion certificate/passing score is required at check in or email results to ahaeducation@asante.org.
- Participants must email completion certificate to ahaeducation@asante.org prior to class to participate (or bring printed certificate of completion to class).
- Participants must pick up and review the PALS Provider Manual prior to class attendance. Email ahaeducation@asante.org to make arrangements for pick-up.

Accreditation - Nursing continuing education
Provider to be approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing Provider Number CEP 17823 for 16 contact hours.
Agenda
- Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. Program begins promptly at 8 a.m. and will adjourn around 5 p.m.
- The two-day provider course lasts approximately 16 hours (8 hours per day) with a one-hour lunch break each day.

Classes are held in the Smullin Health Education Center on the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center campus. Maps available on request.

Enrollment is limited and registration is accepted on a first-come basis. Payment must accompany registration to be accepted. Confirmation and course information are emailed to provided address upon acceptance of application. The course will be cancelled if fewer than five students enroll.
Cancellations
Cancellations must be received via email to ahaeducation@asante.org 14 calendar days before the first date of the course for refund. No refunds will be made after the 14-day date.
