How it works

1. During a da Vinci-assisted surgery, the surgeon makes one or more very small incisions in order to access the surgical site with miniaturized instruments and a high-definition camera.
2. The surgeon, seated at a console, manipulates the camera to provide a magnified, high-resolution, and 3D image of the surgical site.
3. As the surgeon manipulates instruments from a console outside the body, state-of-the-art robotic and computer technologies seamlessly translate the surgeon's hand, wrist, and finger movements into precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient.
4. Da Vinci’s micro-tools can bend and rotate 360 degrees — far beyond the capabilities of the human hand — allowing for extremely precise surgical techniques.
5. The smaller incisions used during a da Vinci-assisted surgery reduce blood loss, decrease trauma to surrounding tissues and speed recovery. 

The human hand performs many delicate tasks during traditional surgery that are impossible to reproduce with other minimally invasive surgeries. The da Vinci Surgical System is the only minimally invasive technology that gives surgeons the dexterity needed for complex surgical procedures while only requiring 1-2 cm incisions.
