FAQ

What do the different levels mean?

According to the American Trauma Society and the American College of Surgeons:

Level I: Regional, tertiary care facility that provides total care for every aspect of injury from prevention to rehabilitation. These centers also provide teaching to medical students/residents. Research is a requirement for these centers. The available specialties at these centers is very comprehensive.

Level II: These provide similar services as Level I but are not often associated with research or teaching. Level II centers have 24/7 coverage by general surgeons and other specialties like orthopedics, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, and critical care. Trauma/injury prevention programs are also required.

Level III: Provides prompt treatment, resuscitation, stabilization and transfer of severely injured patients. They are equipped to care for patients with mild to moderate injuries to allow them to be treated closer to home.

How is our trauma center accredited?

The Oregon Health Authority is our trauma accreditation body. Every three years we go through a very extensive survey process to ensure we are meeting all the state mandated standards.

What is trauma?

Trauma is any injury to the body. Trauma can be caused by many things, such as falls, motor vehicle crashes, gunshot wounds and assaults.

What do we do?

  • Internal performance improvement and peer review to continuously evaluate and change our processes to ensure we are providing the most up to date care following best practices.
  • Involved in local, regional, state and national trauma committees.
  • Collect and submit trauma data to a national trauma quality improvement program to benchmark ourselves against other like trauma centers across the country.
  • We have a team of skilled ED physicians and surgeons available 24/7.
  • Injury prevention – providing free Stop the Bleed classes and working with local emergency medical services and other trauma centers across the state to help our older population avoid falls.
