Waterbirth
For thousands of years, women have used water to ease labor and facilitate birth. Ashland Community Hospital supports a personalized birth experience by offering water births and water immersion-only for individuals with low-risk pregnancies and labors.
The benefits of water birth
A tub assists in delivery.
-
Women who labor or give birth in water often report less pain and a greater sense of control.
-
Studies suggest that women who labor in water may require less pain medication and experience a shorter first stage of labor.
-
Floating in water can be soothing by reducing the effort needed to support your body, allowing for easier position changes.
-
Water heated to your body temperature (98-100°F) helps maintain comfort and relaxation.
Is a waterbirth safe for the mother and child?
Healthy babies usually begin to breathe when they feel air on their mouth and nose, not while underwater. Our providers ensure that your bottom and hips are completely submerged when your baby is born, preventing the baby from touching air before they are born. After birth, you and/or your provider will gently bring your baby to the surface, allowing the them to take their first breath.
If your baby’s heart rate changes while you are in the tub, it may indicate they are having difficulty coping with labor. To ensure your baby’s safety, all babies are monitored throughout labor using a Doppler or electronic fetal heart rate monitor (continuously or intermittently depending on your individual circumstances). If we detect any signs that your baby may be having a problem, we will ask you to leave the tub to ensure the safety of both you and your baby.
Research has shown that there is no greater risk of infection with a water birth. Our staff follows the same strict protocols for maintaining a clean environment as the rest of the hospital, ensuring safety and hygiene.
What if I change my mind about waterbirth?
That's perfectly fine! Some women choose to use the birthing tub only for comfort during labor, while others opt to stay and give birth in the tub. Our team is here to safely support your birth plan, ensuring a positive and personalized experience.
